Dr Karen Phillips
Arrhythmia Cardiologist / Cardiac Electrophysiologist
MBBS (Hons), FRACP, FCSANZ
Dr Karen Phillips has emerged as an expert and one of the leaders of AF Interventional procedures in Australia, including performing Catheter Ablation for AF and implantation of Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Devices for stroke prevention.
She underwent specialised training at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, America's Number One rated Cardiac Hospital in the procedures in 2006-2007 under the mentorship of Dr Andrea Natale, a recognised world leader in AF Ablation.
Since 2008 she has established one of the largest single-operator AF ablation services in Australia at Greenslopes Private Hospital with published results and complication rates on par with recognised centres of excellence in Australia and world-wide.
Dr Phillips is the leading user of Intracardiac echocardiography in Australia and has helped pioneer its application to Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology procedures in Australia. Furthermore, she is a leading implanter of the Watchman® Left Atrial Appendage Occluder device for stroke prevention in Australasia.
Dr Julie Humphries
EchoCardiologist / Cardiac Imaging Cardiologist
MBBS, FRACP, FCSANZ, FASE, BHMS (Ed) (Hons-1st Class)
Dr Julie Humphries underwent specialized training in Echocardiography and cardiac imaging techniques at the acclaimed Mayo Clinic, USA in 2008-2009. She has also had procedure-specific training in LAA occluder devices and percutaneous mitral valve implants at Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
Dr Humphries specialises in Transoesophageal Echocardiography, particularly 3D and
procedural imaging and is involved as faculty for National Echocardiography training programs and conferences for sonographers and cardiologists. She is recognised as the most experienced echocardiographer in left atrial appendage occlusion device procedures in Australia.
Dr Deepak Arumugam
Cardiologist, Heart Rhythm/Device Specialist
MBBS, Bsc (Hons), FRACP, FCSANZ
Dr Deepak Arumugam completed an Honours degree in Neuroscience (majoring in Anatomy and Exercise Physiology) at Monash University, Melbourne before moving to Brisbane and completing medical training at the University of Queensland.
Dr Arumugam trained in cardiology at The Prince Charles, Royal Brisbane and Women's and Gold Coast Hospitals. He pursued sub-specialty training in cardiac electrophysiology, predominantly device implantation (pacemakers and implantable defibrillators) and cardiac catheter ablation at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.
Dr Arumugam then gained further experience including complex ablation (atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia) over a two year fellowship at one of the largest ablation centres in North America at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, British Columbia, Canada.
Dr Terri Hall
BSc, MBBS (Hons), FRACP
Dr Hall is a cardiac imaging specialist with experience in performing procedural structural heart interventions. Dr Hall completed two fellowships in advanced echocardiography at high volume centres. Her first year (2012) was undertaken at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and her second year of training (2013) was at the well-known McMaster University Health Sciences in Hamilton, Ontario Canada.
Dr Hall has a special interest in 3D transoesophageal imaging and frequently performs the TOE guidance for the LAA occluder device implantations at Greenslopes Hospital. Dr Hall also has an interest in cardiac imaging for valvular interventions and is a part of the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) team at the Wesley Hospital.
Dr Michelle Butler
MBBS (Melb), FRACP, FSCANZ
Dr Michelle Butler is a cardiac imaging specialist and has assisted Dr Karen Phillips in WATCHMAN device implantation since 2015. Her training in transoesphageal echocardiography at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, provided experience in structural heart imaging including 3D imaging and device implantation.
