The implantable loop recorder
Irregular heartbeats can be the cause of syncope, and other conditions such as palpitations and unexplained stroke, in some patients. These irregular heartbeats may only occur every now and then, making the source of these conditions difficult to detect.
Long term heart monitoring may help to unlock the answer providing the doctor with information to make a diagnosis.
“The gold standard for the diagnosis of syncope is when a correlation between the symptoms and a documented arrhythmia is recorded”
Moya A et al. Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of syncope (version 2009); The Task Force for the Diagnosis and Management of Syncope of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC); European Heart Journal (2009) 30, 2631–2671
Implantable loop recorders are inserted just under the skin in your chest in a simple, minimally invasive procedure. They can detect and record your monitor your heart rhythm for up to 3 years and usually come with a remote monitor so you can be monitored from home.
